      property of the stalled $3.4 billion Desaru resort as the developer has 
      failed to guarantee its completion on schedule although it had been given 
      a year to do so. Menteri Besar Tan Sri Haji Muhyiddin Yassin said the 
      Government will take possession of the leased 1,742ha area from the 
      developer, Desaru International Resorts Sdn Bhd (DIRSB), within seven

      `Govt must decide role of housing developers'

      THE Government must decide whether it wants housing developers to play the 
      role of deliverer of houses, social engineer or public welfare agency because 
      they are in no position to assume all three, Mr Teo Chiang Kok, president 
      of the Housing Developers Association (HDA) said yesterday. In a keynote address 
      delivered at the two-day national conference on housing and property organised 
      by the HDA in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, he said there, is an urgent need for 
      a review of the role and authority of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government 
      vis-a-vis state housing authorities in respect of the realisation of housing

      problem of unscrupulous house-buyers snapping up low-cost houses in blocks 
      for quick profits continues, Housing and Local Government Minister Dr Ting 
      Chew Peh said. He said the Government might legally prevent house-buyers from 
      buying more than one low-cost house or stop housing developers from selling 
      more than one low-cost house to the same buyer.

      developer. Unfortunately, the unscrupulous lawyer made off with his 
      savings and the loan he had obtained from a bank to finance the purchase 
      of his dream home. Muthu who has been left in a quandary now has to 
      contend with the monthly repayment of the loan apart from supporting his 
      family of six on his dwindling meagre salary. His quest for a home of his 
      own remains a pipe-dream. CASE TWO: Teacher Ahmad had his heart set on 
      buying his dream house - a single-storey terrace house. Having obtained a 
      Government loan, he contacted a lawyer to carry out the necessary 
      documentation. Two months later, the lawyer disappeared with his 
      down-payment and the loan that was approved by the bank. For Ahmad and his 
      family of five, it was a shattering experience. He now holds two jobs and 
      drives a taxi part-time to enable him to repay his loan. ALTHOUGH the 
      names are fictitious, cases such as these are on the rise.
