Meeting safety
standards for buildings 25/04/1999 NSUNT
JUST how safe are our buildings? Some people, like Universiti Malaya lecturer
Nofal Firhat Abdullah who was trained in project management, say there is
nothing to worry about because our construction industry is required to abide
by very high standards. Nofal says our buildings are very safe because the
Malaysian Standard which is based on that of Britain requires structural support
features such as beams to have a safety factor of 2 or 2.5. A beam with a
safety factor of 2, he explains, is designed to take twice the load that it
would actually be carrying.
Regular maintenance
the key 25/04/1999 NSUNT
ACCORDING to government guidelines, high-rise buildings that are five storeys

Malaysia president Mohamed Mazlan says the organisation has been lobbying
for mandatory building maintenance for a long time and hopes that the authorities
move to enact legislation to that effect as soon as possible because so many
high-rise buildings have been built in the last 10 years.

Punish builders

BUILDINGS are constructed to last. Many monumental edifices have withstood

offices remain solid more than a century or two after they had been built.
We have hundreds of these buildings all over the country, no worse due to
wear and tear. These constructions are testimony to the skilled craft of designers
and their workmen. This achievement is all the more laudable as they were
constructed when building technology was relatively primitive
