Have pro-active highlands policy
13/02/1996 NST-LTIMES
WHEN a country develops rapidly, there seems to be a fine line between what
are natural and man-made happenings. For instance, if a hill is cleared (a
man-made activity), it is obvious that there will be soil loss (a natural
occurrence) due to the disturbances to the vegetation. Thus, it should not
surprise Malaysians when the Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu - himself
an architect - revealed last Thursday that the Genting Highlands landslides
on June 30 last year, which killed 20 people, were due to "natural causes."
There is no doubt that soil movement happens naturally. But the question is,
what prompted the soil to erode?
