Geohazards
of building on limestone 07/11/1995 NST-LTIMES
WHEN developers get that "sinking feeling", it means only one thing. They
are in trouble because their pilings have sunk into the rugged limestone bedrock
- the layer below the alluvial deposits namely, sand, gravel and clay - which
geologists term as "unfavourable" for massive land development. Although limestone
is not as solid as granite, it is not the strength of limestone rock which
is at question. Rather, it is its irregular features which are characterised
by crevices, pinnacles and overhangs that cause concern.
