Low cost flats in Batu Caves
safe 01/09/1997 NST-LTIMES
THE four blocks of low cost flats at Pinggiran Batu Caves, Taman Sri Gombak,
which developed cracks due to earth movement are safe for occupation as the
cracks do not affect the main structure. This was the conclusion reached by
the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Kasjoo Kadis and the State
Assemblyman for Gombak Setia Datin Rakibah Abdul Manap who toured the area
on Saturday following numerous complaint from residents.

PUBLIC apathy, low awareness and a lack of expertise have been cited as the
main reasons for the poor response whenever members of the public are asked
to comment on detailed Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). According

week, of the three EIAs reviewed last year, only seven written comments were
received.
Strata titles: Come down hard
on errant developers 03/09/1997 NST
PARLIAMENTARY Secretary to the Ministry of Land and Co-operative Development
Datuk Fauzi Abdul Rahman (now Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department)
has rightly pointed out the seriousness of the problems faced by buyers of
high-rise buildings who have yet to be issued strata titles as provided for
by the Strata Titles Act 1985. The penalty for not doing so appears to be
quite serious (NST, Aug 15). It is quite puzzling why the ministry has to
appeal to Members of Parliament to trace those errant developers when the
collectors of land revenue would have records of all the developers.
Settle arrears to get strata
titles 11/09/1997 MM
THE Selangor Economic Development Corporation (PKNS) house buyers in Ampang-Ulu
Klang and Sri Kembangan, Serdang, have been reminded to settle their quit
rent arrears if they want ownership. PKNS public relations manager Mohamad

PENANG, Mon. - The Penang Island Municipal Council is abiding to stringent
guidelines in vetting and approving certain development projects following

reports for some development projects, especially those involving structures
with basements and those located on marine clay soil.
Fewer nightmares with geotechnical
reports in place 17/09/1997 NST
GEOTECHNICAL reports for development projects in Penang are finally admitted
to be vital, after the State Government found itself mired in embarrassment
early this year over what was once touted as Georgetown's "new era of shopping
paradise". Penang Island Municipal Council president Dr Teng Hock Nan's announcement
on Monday that stringent guidelines, which include the requirement of geotechnical
reports in vetting of development projects, is perhaps a move which should
be emulated by other local authorities.
