RM4,000 for house amenities
17/04/1997 NST
IT will cost a middle or low-cost housebuyer about RM4,000 to equip the house
with basic amenities such as electrical wiring, water tank and waste treatment
system. For low-cost houses, the contribution for the basic amenities is waived,
said Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Peter Chin Fah Kui. He was
replying to Lim Guan Eng's (DAP-Kota Melaka) question of fairness to "force"
housing developers and house buyers to bear the costs for sewerage, telephone
and electricity, when the supply system for the services is privatised, claiming
it would increase the cost of houses by RM8,000. "Among the basic amenities
that have to be built is a water tank which costs RM285, the electrical system
which costs RM705 and waste treatment system costing RM1,136. These and some
others would not come up to RM8,000 for medium and low-cost houses. "The RM8,000
figure may be for high-cost houses," said Chin. He said the infrastructure
for sewage is part of the basic infrastructure for any housing development
and therefore it is fair that it is provided by the developer.

million trees by the year 2000 and 20 million trees by 2020.
