KUALA LUMPUR: Jabatan Peguam Negara masih mengkaji secara terperinci
laporan tragedi Highland Towers yang mengorbankan 48 nyawa, Disember 1993
lalu. Sehubungan itu, Peguam Negara, Datuk Mohtar Abdullah, berkata
pihaknya masih belum dapat membuat sebarang keputusan muktamad mengenainya
setakat ini.

Council appeals to set aside
court decision MM 25/01/1996
THE Ampang Jaya Municipal Council is appealing to set aside a High Court
decision quashing its notice to owners of Highland Towers Blocks 2 and 3
in July last year. MPAJ council president Abdul Karim Munisar said the
council's panel lawyers had filed an appeal with the Federal Court last
month and are awaiting a hearing date.

KUALA LUMPUR, Khamis - Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya dan Jawatankuasa
Siasatan Keruntuhan Pangsapuri Highland Towers sudah mengemukakan laporan
mengenai keruntuhan pangsapuri itu kepada Peguam Negara. Timbalan Menteri
Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan, Datuk Tajol Rosli Ghazali, berkata
siasatan itu mengambil masa yang lama untuk mengumpul fakta mencukupi
sebelum mendakwa pihak terbabit ke mahkamah.

Highland Towers: Up to
Mohtar now NST 19/04/1996
LEGAL action against those involved in the Highland Towers tragedy now
rests with the Attorney-General's Chambers, Housing and Local Government
Deputy Minister Datuk Tajol Rosli said yesterday. He said the ministry was
also informed that the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council has submitted reports
from their investigations to the A-G's office.

Rundingan Highland Towers

HULU KLANG: Pemilik pangsapuri Highland Towers di sini mungkin terpaksa
menunggu lebih lama untuk mengetahui keputusan tuntutan pampasan mereka
apabila pelbagai rundingan yang diadakan sebelum ini menemui jalan buntu.
Walaupun tragedi kondominium runtuh itu berlaku hampir tiga tahun lalu,
jawatankuasa penduduknya dikatakan masih berusaha mengadakan rundingan
dengan pelbagai pihak yang turut bertanggungjawab dalam tragedi itu.

FORTY-EIGHT lives perished when a Highland Towers condominium collapsed on
Dec 11, 1993, but the tragedy also took its toll on public confidence in
the ability of our rescue teams to handle such complex disasters. Not only
did the authorities have to call in foreign experts, but tales of
difficulties in co-ordination among the numerous rescue agencies swarming
at the site also surfaced.

KUALA LUMPUR, Fri. - Owners and residents of the two remaining Highland
Towers apartment blocks in Hulu Klang have set the wheels in motion to
file a multi-million ringgit suit against those held responsible for the
1993 tragedy. To further strenghten their case, the victims have
identified an England-based consultant engineering firm, recommended by
the Association of Consulting Engineers of the United Kingdom, to provide
them with expert technical support.

THE Highland Towers tragedy in 1993 brutally shook the sensibilities of
Malaysians. In a country relatively free of natural calamities, the
stunning blow of 48 lost lives was doubly hard to take. The Genting
Highlands landslide in 1995 took 20 lives. As with the Highland Towers
disaster, the now-familiar pattern of political reaction and temporary
public outrage followed.

Highland Towers apartments in Hulu Klang have filed a suit against those
held responsible for the 1993 tragedy. In their suit which was filed two
days ago, the plaintiffs were seeking compensation for the loss of their

TUGU peringatan berwarna kelabu setinggi dua meter berdiri kaku di sudut
kiri kawasan yang pernah menempatkan sebuah pangsapuri 12 tingkat dengan
50 unit kediaman. Di belakang tugu itu, kesan cairan lilin dan kayu gaharu
yang separuh terbakar, menunjukkan masih ada orang yang mengunjungi tempat
itu, mungkin untuk berdoa bagi orang tersayang.

tragedi pangsapuri Highland Towers Hulu Klang yang runtuh tiga tahun lalu,
memfailkan saman menuntut ganti rugi daripada pemaju Highland Properties
Sdn Bhd dan lapan yang lain. Saman itu difailkan di pejabat Pendaftar
Mahkamah Tinggi Wisma Denmark di sini hari ini, sehari sebelum tamat
tempoh yang dibenarkan untuk mengemukakan saman membabitkan kerajaan.

Highland Towers: Sixty
victims and kin file suit NST 11/12/1996
KUALA LUMPUR, Tues. - Sixty victims and kin of those affected by the
collapsed Block 1 of Highland Towers condominium today filed a suit at the
High Court against developer Highland Properties Sdn Bhd and eight others.
Their action was filed in the High Court (Civil Division) registry at
Wisma Denmark through the legal firm of Skrine & Co.

KUALA LUMPUR, Rabu - Tapak tragedi pangsapuri Blok 1 Highland Towers di
Hulu Klang yang tumbang pada 11 Disember 1993 kembali menjadi tumpuan hari
ini apabila waris serta penghuni yang terselamat memperingati ulang tahun
ketiga tragedi yang meragut 48 nyawa itu. Walaupun tahun ini tiada upacara
peringatan khas diadakan seperti dua tahun lalu, waris yang kehilangan
anak, suami dan isteri tetap menguatkan semangat datang membawa jambangan
bunga dan memberi penghormatan di tugu peringatan di situ.

KUALA LUMPUR: Setelah tiga tahun blok satu Kondominium Highland Towers
runtuh, menyebabkan 48 orang terbunuh, waris dan keluarga mangsa serta
penghuni kondominium itu masih kecewa dengan kurangnya tindakan diambil
berhubung kejadian itu. "Berapa banyak jawatankuasa (pemilik dan penghuni
kondominium) boleh lakukan? Jika pemaju membina rumah dan ia tiba-tiba
runtuh, mereka perlu bertanggungjawab," kata Dr P G George, seorang waris
mangsa.

Now just a haunt for addicts

THE unoccupied Blocks Two and Three of the Highland Towers condominium in
Hulu Klang are no more than dadah haunts now. Addicts have made a mess of
the apartments after looters ripped out all that are valuable in the
units.

Grief still haunts those who

KUALA LUMPUR, Wed. - Three years have passed, yet memories and grief still
haunt family members and relatives of the 48 people killed in the Highland
Towers collapse. For Dr P.G. George, who lost his wife, Dr Anne George and
his daughters Debbie and Sharon, life has been difficult and until today,
he has a tough time coping with the loss.

pangsapuri Highland Towers Hulu Klang, yang kini disahkan tidak selamat
diduduki, mengemukakan saman menuntut ganti rugi khas lebih RM52 juta
daripada pemaju, Highland Properties Sdn Bhd dan sembilan yang lain. Saman
itu difailkan di pejabat Pendaftar Mahkamah Tinggi Wisma Denmark di sini,
dan menamakan Wong Tin Sang (menjalankan perniagaan sebagai Konsortium
Jurubina Perunding); Wong Yuen Kean (berniaga sebagai Waja Perunding);
Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ) sebagai defendan.

saman menuntut ganti rugi daripada pemaju Highland Properties Sdn Bhd dan
sembilan pihak lagi. Saman itu difailkan di pejabat Pendaftar Mahkamah
Tinggi di sini, pada 4 Disember lalu.

Highland Towers: 73 seek

KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs. - Seventy three owners and occupiers of Blocks Two
and Three of Highland Towers have filed a suit against 10 defendants
claiming special damages amounting to about RM50 million for their
negligence which caused their blocks to be abandoned. The plaintiffs said
that the defendants' negligence had caused their blocks to be abandoned
following the collapse of Block One on Dec 11, 1993.

Builders must put lives

THE Highland Towers tragedy is something Faridah Hanum Ali will remember
for the rest of her life. Three years after the incident, Faridah, 20, can
still recall vividly the reports on TV and in the newspapers, and the
grief on the faces of those who lost their loved ones there.
