KUALA LUMPUR: A damaged drainage system and leaking pipes — these are the
major factors that contributed to the devastating Bukit Antarabangsa
landslide which killed five people on Dec 6 last year.
The Final Landslide Investigation Report, declassified by the Cabinet on
Saturday, noted that leaking water pipelines near some abandoned houses
along Jalan Wangsa 11 not far from the landslide area contributed to a
build-up of high-pore water pressure in the slope.
Remembering loved ones: Datin Jamilah Mohd Kassim, who lost her son
Shaiful Khas, 20, in the tragedy last year cannot contain herself during a
memorial event of the landslide while Syed Azman Al Bukhary, the Impian
Selatan condominium residents association chairman (inset), also could not
hold back his tears.
The report ruled out earthquake as a cause of the landslide which
destroyed 14 bungalows in Hulu Klang as seismic records showed that there
was no sign of earthquake motion that day or a month before.
Yesterday, a year to the day the tragedy occurred, more than 100 residents
gathered to hold a memorial service in the area. And the tears flowed
freely. |
