Contractor
may lose Plaza Rakyat project

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja
Zainal Abidin has given the ultimatum to the current contractor of Plaza
Rakyat, Global Upline Sdn Bhd, to either resume the abandoned project or
risk losing it to another company. He said the ministry had received
several proposals from contractors who were keen to revive the project.
However, Raja Nong Chik said the ministry had yet to accept any of the
proposals pending a reply from Global Upline which had been given until
the end of the month to respond.
Raja Nong Chik said if Global Upline failed to respond and accept the
terms specified, it would have to give way to other contractors vying for
the RM1.2 billion project.
The Plaza Rakyat project, which stalled in 1992, is supposed to be a mixed
commercial development comprising a 79-storey office tower, 45-storey
hotel and a serviced apartment building as well as shopping centre.
Raja Nong Chik was speaking after an hour walkabout in Mid Valley Megamall
and The Gardens.
During the walkabout, he was accompanied by mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail,
City Hall director-general Datuk Salleh Yusup, Mid Valley City's executive
director Antony Barragry, IGB Corporation Bhd group managing director
Robert Tan and City Hall officials. -- By Halim Said
