State Government Forms Committee To Solve Luxury Condominium's Management Issue
13/10/2008 Bernama

PENANG, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The Penang Government has set up a committee to collect data from a Marina Bay luxury condominium resident, following his appeal that it be run by a joint mangement body (JMB).

The committee would be headed by Penang Town and Country Planning and Housing Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

Others in the committee are state health, welfare and caring society committee chairman Phee Boon Poh and state deomestic trade and consumer affairs committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.

Wong told a press conference today that the resident had earlier applied to the Commissioner of Building for a JMB but was rejected last June.

He said the reason for the commissioner to reject the application was that the propety in Marina Bay was private leasehold and many residents were lessees.

Wong said however, that under the Building and Common Property (Maintenance and Management) Act 2007 (Act 663), the resident could still appeal to the state authority within 14 days after notification of the commissioner's decision.

As this was the first such case in the state, he said the government would need some time to compile a report before making a decision by year-end.

The Tanjong Tokong-based Marina Bay condominium which comprises three towers and has 450 units, is currently managed by the developer.

It was built on land belonging to the Kwangtung and Tengchow Association and given a leasehold title.
