Individual water meters compulsory for condo/apartment owners
14/05/2008 NST

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government will make it compulsory for apartment/condominium managements to change from the bulk meter system to individual meters for water supply.

This is to ensure that all Selangor residents will benefit from free water supply for the first 20 cubic metres monthly from this June.

The latest move followed complaints from residents that companies managing the apartments and condominiums were reluctant to change to the individual meter system when asked by the residents to do so.

"It is probably because they can charge more when they use bulk meters, while some residents are themselves reluctant, perhaps due to outstanding water bills," state Housing, Building and Squatter Management Committee chairman Iskandar Abdul Samad said after opening the Selangor State Development Corporation's affordable home sale on Monday.

"Perhaps what we can do is to introduce a law to make it mandatory for the management companies to apply for individual meters. I will propose to the state executive council that all new developments must have individual water meters for condo units."

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim recently announced that the state government would provide 20 cubic metres of water free to each household in Selangor monthly from June. -- Bernama
