Opportunists behind land scams
06/04/2008 New Straits Times

PETALING JAYA: The reported cases of land fraud in Selangor was not the work of syndicates but opportunistic individuals, said state police chief DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar.

"Investigations has revealed that individuals are responsible for these cases and not syndicates," he said after launching a new police beat base in Damai Perdana.

Former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said on Thursday that several cases of land fraud had been detected during his tenure and it was subsequently reported to the police.

The new state government had earlier stated that it had uncovered several cases of land fraud.

Yesterday's beat base was the 40th to be launched in Selangor since February as part of police efforts to ensure a greater presence on the streets.

When asked about several cases of bank customers reporting that money had gone missing from their accounts, Khalid said it could be due to unscrupulous individuals obtaining the victims' PIN numbers.
