Damage claims to be submitted
21/05/2007 The Malay Mail By Khairun Nizam Ab Ghani

THE compensation claims by residents of Taman Subang Idaman, Subang Jaya, whose electrical appliances were damaged during a power surge on May 9, will be submitted to Tenaga Nasional Bhd today.

In all, some 500 residents were said to have been affected by the incident.

Their representative, Zaimi Abdul Rahman, who is Nuri Apartments Residents’ Association head, however, said only 80 had handed their claim forms to him to be submitted to the power company.

“The association’s office was open from 9am to 1pm on the following Sunday after the incident for residents to fill up the compensation claim forms,” he added.

To inform the affected residents, posters were put up at every level of two apartments affected by the power surge, Pangsa Indah and Nuri Apartments.

In addition, announcements were made to inform residents about the need to fill up their forms if they wanted to seek compensations from TNB.

“Now that the claims have been compiled, I will submit them to TNB tomorrow (today) and we shall see how TNB is going to compensate us,” Zaimi said.

It is learnt that the housing developer, Merge Housing Bhd, had lodged a police report on the power surge on the day of the incident.

Zaimi said the majority of the residents who had returned their forms had claimed damages to at least three electrical items.

“Most of the claimants lost their TVs and Astro decoder to the power surge,” he added.

“Hopefully, the TNB will pay every resident a fair amount of compensation.”

Last week, The Malay Mail quoted TNB external communications head Sidek Kamiso saying that affected residents would be compensated if investigations showed that the surge was due to TNB’s fault.

Sidek had also said that the surge might be due to power flactuations, which were often attributed to a missing safety device regulating the system.

In the incident, an apartment was badly damaged when two of its rooms caught fire.

No injuries were reported.
