When every sen counts
05/09/2006 The Star

I AM a resident of USJ 16 and recently a certain group of residents decided to put a boom gate at the main entrance to the neighbourhood.

This group went round to collect money for putting up the gate. The collection per household is RM40 per month, with an initial payment for six months from the 550 houses in the area.

I went to check with them while they were giving out the stickers to those who signed up and someone in the group said the money would go into a sinking fund for future putting up fences around the entire USJ16.

I am not against putting up the boom gate but I think it is expensive.

I pay my income tax, quit rent and assessment; why do I still have to pay for security and upgrading of the common area around my property?

I might be among a small group of people here who do not wish to pay such a hefty amount but I would be viewed as being uncooperative and without consideration for the neighbourhood.

We all want security but then isn’t that what we are already entitled to when we pay our dues?

I wish I can just go about living peacefully without having to deal with all these daily worries about safety and forking out additional payments.

These days with the escalating cost of living, every sen counts if your budget is limited.
