IF THE letters and comments made by various quarters in the media are
anything to go by, the Consumers Tribunal enforcement division should come
down harder against those challenging awards handed down by the tribunal.
They must be punished without hesitation.
Though taking the case to the High Court for judicial review is their right,
subsequently not attending the hearing is nothing more than abusing the
process of the law.
After exhausting the avenue of appeal, these people still continue to defy
the tribunal’s decision, showing a clear disrespect of the law and making a
total mockery of the tribunal.
I hope the court will not only fine them but also jail them. If necessary,
the Government should amend the Consumers Act to include a mandatory jail
sentence.
This will definitely deter all those who want to try the same tricks and
also help the tribunal from being inundated with problems of non-compliance
which is a waste of human resources and government funds.
Setting up the Homebuyers Claims Tribunal is a step in the right direction.
