Kampung Pasir landslide Tick,
tock, tick, tock...
26/06/2006 THE MALAY MAIL
IT’S a ticking time bomb.
But the only action from the authorities so far is the plastic sheets
covering the site of a landslide which killed four villagers of Kampung
Pasir earlier this month.
However, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council president Datuk Ahmad Shafii Saidin
said a preliminary report will be out soon.
He said the Public Works Department is checking the area and will prepare
the report.
"In the meantime, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) is draining
the remaining water out of the area so that it will not turn into a swamp.
"The 11 families involved in the tragedy have been relocated to the nearby
Ukay Bistari and will remain there until the hillslope is reconstructed.
"We contacted the house owners through the developer to let us use their
homes for six months," he said.
The council is footing the bill.
Federal Territories Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Hakim Borhan said
a meeting will be held with relevant agencies today.
"City Hall officers will brief us on their findings on Bukit Mas, Taman
Melawati, before deciding on the next course of action," he said, adding
that he will head the committee.
The committee members comprise officers from Kuala Lumpur City Hall,
Putrajaya Corporation, directors of the Federal Territory Survey and Mapping
Department, Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd),
Mineral and Geoscience Department, the National Soil Erosion Research Centre
(Nasec), Public Works Department, Environment, Land and Mineral Office,
Drainage and Irrigation Department and Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
Following the Kampung Pasir tragedy, Federal Territories Deputy Minister
Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusof and Datuk Bandar Datuk Ruslin Hasan visited Bukit
Mas after residents complained about a housing development proposal nearby.
They said the hillslope was not suitable for any development, especially as
it is close to a reservoir and has only one access road.
