Regulate and monitor projects
27/11/2006 The Star By VICKNESH WELLUPPILLAI, Kuala Lumpur.

I REFER to your report of a massive landslide in Taman Bukit Serdang that sent several families scurrying to safety, “Road collapses in landslide” (The Star, Nov 23).

This latest landslide only continues to highlight that we have yet to learn from previous mishaps where lives were lost.

While all and sundry were concerned about stopgap measures no one stated the obvious.

There is currently rampant development going on at Taman Bukit Serdang. What is even more distressing is that some of the development projects consist of apartments and high-rise flats.

Should further development not be stopped, we could be looking at a tragedy of enormous proportions.

Rampant development is development that is not regulated, planned or monitored and this has been the cause of tragic accidents and loss of lives.

Taman Bukit Serdang is already congested both by the mushrooming of buildings and vehicular traffic. The roads leading to this area are in a mess.

What is required in this area is a halt in development, an improvement in the drainage system and better and broader access roads.

One can only hope the ad hoc measures taken at Taman Bukit Serdang are not similar to the way the potholes on our roads are filled.
