THE water crisis faced by an estimated 7,000 residents of Bukit
Beruntung 1 and Bukit Sentosa 3, north of Rawang, is expected to be over
soon.
Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) corporate
communications and public affairs division executive director Naemuddin
Abdullah said 70% of the residents had paid deposits to Syabas for the
installation of domestic water metres.
“Another 30% of the residents haven’t paid yet but I hope they will
do so soon to avoid disruption of water supply,” he told reporters at
the launch of an educational programme on the rehabilitation of rivers
and importance of water at SK Bukit Kemuning 2 by Deputy Education
Minister Datuk Noh Omar in Shah Alam recently.
Several months ago, the residents in the two townships were left high
and dry when Syabas cut their water supply after the developers of both
areas failed to settle outstanding arrears with the water company.

The issue drew the attention of Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr
Mohd Khir Toyo and Batang Kali assemblyman Datuk Zainal Abidin Sakom.
Zainal Abidin was quoted as saying that the developer owed Syabas
RM3.5mil in arrears.
Earlier, Noh said employees of Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) had
visited 80 primary schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur since June 15,
2006, to implement the educational programme. “I believe this campaign
will create a long-term impact on the children, who are the future
leaders of the country.
“It is important to shape them from young and expose them to the
importance of clean water and unpolluted rivers for their own future and
that of future generations,” he said.
He said the educational programme by Syabas was well received by the
public because more parents and school authorities were asking for the
programme to be held at their schools.
“The increase of the water tariff recently is actually aimed at
inculcating the value of saving water,” he added. Executive director of
PNSB Datuk Shaari Ismail said the programme involved employees from both
PNSB and Syabas visiting selected primary schools and holding talks on
the rehabilitation of rivers and the importance of clean water.
