Bitter taste in the mouth for
consumers The Star 02/11/2006
THE increase in water tariff does leave a bitter taste in the mouth of the
consumers in this country, “Pay more for water” (The Star, Nov 1).
Water, like electricity, is a basic commodity used by the public and while
the electricity tariff is subject to increase in the price of oil and
petrol, water is free as our country gets rain practically throughout the
year.
We can expect businessmen to raise the prices of goods as a result of this
increase and the poor consumers will have to tighten their belts in these
trying times.
I wonder if it is not possible for the company managing our water to reduce
wastage due to leakage and catch water thieves instead of burdening the
public with the increase in tariff.
Also, people are complaining about the murky water running through their
taps and many have to install filters.
