Malaysia's Aid For Tsunami
Victims Fascinates World Bank
Bernama 19/10/2006
SUNGAI PETANI, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The World Bank is fascinated by the
efforts of the Malaysian government and its people in helping the country's
victims of the Dec 2004 tsunami disaster, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Deputy Prime Minister said a World Bank representative, who visited
Malaysia recently, shook his head in disbelief at the assistance rendered,
which included the provision of houses, boats, fishing equipment and cash
for those affected.
"Tsunami victims in this country, including those in Permatong Katong are
getting a lot of help, even a bungalow housing scheme.
"If the World Bank representative comes again, I will take him to meet the
people we had helped," he said when launching a housing scheme for Permatang
Katong's tsunami victims in Kota Kuala Muda near here Thursday.
He later broke fast with the people at Kampung Masjid Mosque. Also present
was Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
Najib said the government had assisted the tsunami victims in Permatang
Katong, Langkawi, Kota Kuala Muda and Penang out of concern for their
wellbeing.
He said Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad had been entrusted with the task of
repairing the victims houses, to build transit homes and coming up with
housing schemes for them and that RM62.28 million had been allocated for
these projects.
In Permatang Katong, he said 126 houses were built at the cost of RM10.7
million or RM40,000 each and the victims had to pay merely RM13,333 for them
through a repayment scheme of only RM50 a month.
Najib asked the tsunami victims of Permatang Katong to look after their
bungalow houses well and make them an example to be emulated by others.
