Still no park after 10 years
Malay Mail 6/6/2005
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5:
When people bought units in Taman Shamelin Bestari Condominium, part of the
attraction was that a large plot near it was to be developed into a park.
Ten years on, the buyers are still waiting for Taman Tasik Pudu Ulu. They
want Kuala Lumpur City Hall to make good the promise.
"The park is not just for the benefit of condominium residents but also for
the whole of Cheras south, which has 500,000 residents," Cheras Member of
Parliament Tan Kok Wai said.
"The park was supposed to be equipped with a man- made lake, jogging tracks,
an auditorium and hawker facilities.
"Residents had to live for years without a proper place for them to exercise,
relax and watch their children grow."
Tan said the park ground was prime property and Cheras residents were worried
that it would be used for commercial development.
Resident Dr Thohiroh Abdul Razak, 37, said many residents felt the need to
have a park.
"When my husband and I bought our place, we were attracted by the prospect
of a nice park facing the condominium. Today, we jog around the block for
exercise while our children have to play in the car park."
Housewife Palitpkaur Gill, 42, is worried about the area becoming a breeding
ground for mosquitoes.
"Recently, a few people contracted dengue, which we suspect is because a part
of the park area is an illegal dumping site."
Property agent Kelvin Yim, 42, said many residents have been waiting in vain.
"I’m very disappointed because nothing has been done, only empty talk."
Shamelin Bestari Residents Association president William Lim said he would
send a petition to City Hall.
"Recently, there was a signboard put up indicating that the land was to be
developed.
"It has since been taken down but that has spurred us to take decisive action
now. We fear not seeing the park built within our lifetime."
