Sleepless nights over dumpsite
Malay Mail 8/6/2005

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7

Residents of Bukit OUG here are having sleepless nights as the area has turned noisy and dusty over the past seven months.

This happened after a vacant land in the area was used as an ‘illegal’ dumping ground for construction debris.

Sand, dust and noise caused by the dumping lorries are a bane in the residential area. The area worst affected is Jalan Persiaran 155A which is behind the dumping ground.

Resident Tan Tee Woon said they had to close all their windows and backdoors. “Usually, the dumping goes on from 5pm until 2am or 3am. It has made our lives uncomfortable,” said Tan, 39.

“Previously, the land was green and it became a dumping ground after a fire consumed the site. During a recent visit there, The Malay Mail saw that besides construction debris, several diesel barrels had also been dumped there.

In a Press statement, City Hall public relations officer Hanim Hashim said the dumping was done on private land.

“Our investigations showed, the land is used as a store for lorries and oil barrels,” she said. She said that until now, six notices under Section 47(1) of the Drainage and Building Act 1974 had been issued to the owner for the mess.

“We will continue our enforcement and observation of the owner’s activities,” said Hanim.
