KUCHING, June 8 (Bernama) -- Five Housing Development Commission (HDC)
projects worth nearly RM200 million are facing serious problems,
said Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the projects were the Rakyat Housing Project in Pusa, Bandar
Baru SibuJaya, in Song, Rangau III, Limbang and another project at
Tanjung Manis A.
The projects could not be completed in time due to the contractors'
"under capacity" and inability to complete them on time, he said.
Stressing that the project was under the Eighth Malaysia Plan (8MP),
Abang Johari said it had to be completed before the 8MP ended.
"We have to ensure that the projects are completed as soon as
possible because there will be more housing projects under the Ninth
Malaysia Plan (9MP)," he told reporters at a Press conference on the
problems facing the projects, here, Wednesday.
Other problems faced in implementing the projects were buyers'
dissatisfaction with the designs, and poor coordination among the
various agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Local
authorities and the consultants.
"Based on inspections carried out since January this year, the five
projects were found to be in `critical' condition," he said.
Abang Johari said the Ministry had decided to award the tender to
build houses comprising 300 units and above to two contractors
instead of one, to ensure the projects could be finished on time.
He said only contractors with a proven track record would be awarded
tenders in future.
He added that a committee had been formed at state, federal-state
and private sector levels to look into the issuance of Occupancy
Permits for houses.
According to the minister, the designs for housing projects at
Permyjaya (Taman Ceria), and Sibujaya (Garden Terrace) had been
improved to cater to the taste of buyers.
