CM: 121,000 houses built
since 1994
The Star Penang 11/6/2005
The Penang state government has approved the construction of about
121,000 units of houses since 1994.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said it had also approved
5,000 units of commercial property covering 14mil sq m of land.
“As for hotels, we have approved 15,000 rooms totalling about 1.9mil
sq m in floor space,” he said at the opening of MAPEX (Malaysia
Property Exhibition) 2005 here yesterday.
Dr Koh said the island was only about 300sq km in area, compared to
Seberang Prai, which was about 700sq m in area.
“Since it is smaller, permission to develop projects on the island is
harder to obtain, compared to Seberang Prai.
“If a project is on the hills, then we have to consider the impact
of hill cutting and the environment.
“Since our roads are much narrower, we also have to consider the
impact of the project on the flow of traffic,” he said.
Dr Koh said he had instructed the heads of the two local councils to
convene the SPEAD (Surveyors Planners, Engineers, Architects, and
Developers) meeting to resolve problems faced by property
developers.
The MAPEX 2005, held at the Penang International Sports Arena until
tomorrow, is organised by Real Estate & Housing Developer
Association (REDHA) and Kwong Wah Jit Poh.
A total of 54 booths were set up at the exhibition by local and
outstation developers and financial institutions. |
