No remedial work despite promise
The Star 26/05/2005
IT HAS been more than a month but no remedial work has been carried out on
the ravaged sites near Jalan Cemerlang and Jalan Gallagher in Taman Duta,
Kuala Lumpur, despite City Hall promising to do so.
After issuing fines to the landowners who were carrying
out illegal land clearing and filling work at both sites, the owners were
also directed to level the earth and build earth traps and drains, returf
bare slopes and clean up drains filled with earth from the site.
If they failed to do so within two weeks, City Hall
would carry out the job and bill them for the costs. The council also assured the residents that it would
repair and remedy the damage caused to the infrastructure beyond the sites
within a week.
But no proper remedial work has been carried out at the
sites so far. It was earlier reported that City Hall director-general
Salleh Yusop had fined the owners RM50,000 and ordered them to stop work
and start remedial work immediately.
However, when Star Metro visited the sites recently
after getting a tip off from the residents of Seri Duta 1 condominium in
Jalan Gallagher it was discovered that some of the plastic sheets placed
on the slopes of the land to prevent erosion have been blown off by the
wind and erosion has started along the slopes.
A concerned resident, who is a geotechnical and
environmental engineer, said some of the plastic sheets had been
blown away by strong winds and has exposed the slopes to erosion.
"I am concerned about the safety of Seri Duta 1's
security guards. The Seri Duta 1 guardhouse is facing one of the sites,"
he said, adding he was appalled by the attitude of the contractors,
engineers and authorities.
"People are talking about the trees being cut and the
damage to the environment, but shouldn't safety be our priority here?"
asked the resident.
Seri Duta 1 condominium management council chairman
Annie Livesey said City Hall had failed to fulfil promises made to her
during the meeting held at City Hall last month.
"I am disappointed that they failed to keep their word
to carry out remedial work with immediate effect. "City Hall promised to clean the drains and even that
was not followed through," she said.
Livesey said efforts to get someone from City Hall to
respond proved futile. The illegal projects were highlighted after residents
brought the matter to the press and Segambut MP Dr tan Kee Kwong.
