MB slams developers who ignore EIA
reports

PUCHONG: To some developers and contractors, Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) reports mean nothing.Selangor
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said these developers blatantly
'bulldozed' their construction sites as they failed to read or understand
the importance of such reports.
"They do not have any regard for the environment, having
failed to understand and adhere to the contents of the EIA reports.
"Due to this lack of awareness, the State Government has
decided to conduct a short course on development and environment for
developers involved in projects in Selangor," he said.
He said the course would be conducted at Universiti
Selangor and would adopt the syllabus of the Centre of Environmental
Protection of Southern Queensland University in Australia.
The three-month course, which is also open to
development consultants, is expected to begin in August or September. On
completion, participants will get certificates.
Dr Khir said the course would teach developers and
contractors how to develop a land with minimal impact on the environment.
He also encouraged sub-contractors to take up the
course, adding that for the time being, there is no intention to make the
course compulsory for them.
However, he said it would be made compulsory for
Government servants whose jobs entailed monitoring development in their
respective areas.
"It is disheartening to learn that some officers in
charge of monitoring development are not well-versed in environmental
aspects," said Dr Khir. |
