We have nowhere else to go, say flat residents
The Star 03/02/2005PENANG: Residents are unfazed and carrying on with their daily lives
despite the warning that their five-storey walk-up flats in Bayan Baru are
unsafe for occupation.
Most of them interviewed said they were not leaving as it was impossible
to move out of their units overnight.
Many shrugged and said they had nowhere to stay when asked if they were
not afraid that the building might collapse.
Halimah Lazim, 45, who has been living there for the past 20 years, said
cracks in the wall in her unit caused her floor to be flooded every time
it rained heavily.
The part-time factory canteen helper said the wall was made of
hollow-cement bricks.
“I have complained to the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) numerous
times, and each time after my complaint they would visit the unit, take
some photographs and nothing is done after that.
“My husband has been paralysed for the past 10 years and if anything
should happen, I can't even run out of the house with him,'' she said,
adding that they needed a place nearby to move out to.
Housewife Rani Kaur said that although she was scared to stay in her
two-room flat, she had yet to find a suitable place to move to. |
