Quit rent to go up by 10pc in Selangor
New Straits Times 1/12/2005

SHAH ALAM: Quit rent will increase by 10 per cent for all properties in Selangor from Jan 1.

The rates vary among the nine districts in the State, with property owners now paying between RM33 and RM150 per square metre. It will go up from RM36 to RM165 per square metre under the new rates.

Zoal Azha said the State was expected to earn an extra revenue of RM40 million yearly from the increase. At present, quit rent contributes RM300 million to the State’s coffers annually.

He said this in a briefing to the media today.

On quit rent arrears, Zoal Azha said it stood at about RM504 million and the State Government was concerned by the high amount.

"That’s why we are going to embark on house visits to get land and property owners to settle their dues."

On another issue, he said there were about 100,000 apartment and condominium units in the State yet to be issued with strata titles, although applications had been submitted.

He said the backlog was from applications submitted in 1999.

Zoal Azha said one main reason for the delay was title conversion which was exacerbated by property owners failing to settle land premiums.

On developers who failed to apply for strata titles for their projects, he said the Land Office was working with local authorities to identify them.
