Unending problems bring residents closer
The Star 22/11/2005

RESIDENTS of Taman Cheras Jaya Phase Four have come together to tackle the problems plaguing their neighbourhood, and the first of their coordinated effort is to set up a Rukun Tetangga.

The 25-strong pro tem committee and more than 50 residents attended a briefing conducted by Selangor National Unity Department assistant unity officer Nazliza Muhammad Nazrin and Hulu Langat RT Co-ordinator deputy chairman Chin Choong Fuan recently.

Also present at the briefing was Balakong assemblyman Datuk Hoh Hee Lee, who advised the residents to set up its Rukun Tetangga in order to solve the area's problems more efficiently.

Residents were reminded that the function of a Rukun Tetangga had changed from security patrol to addressing social problems and organising activities to improve good neighbourliness.

“Unity is something that we ought to continuously work on. I notice that in some places, a lot of Chinese still stay away from community activities; I hope this area will be different,” said Hoh.

Hoh speaking to the residents as Chin and Nazliza listen at the briefing in Taman Cheras Jaya Phase Four recently.

Pro-tem president Yap Leong Bee said residents had been facing break-ins, robberies and snatch thefts constantly.

He said foreign workers who lived in the housing estate often fought among themselves.

He added that the foreigners would occupy the whole field on weekends, holding large-scale tournaments participated by some 400 foreign workers who come from other housing areas.

Yap said another major problem was the badly vandalised new public hall.

Hoh urged employers of the foreign workers to put up their contact numbers on the gates of the houses for residents to channel their complaints.

On the public hall, he said, Kajang Municipal Council could not issue certificate of fitness because the contractor had failed to comply with several technical requirements. He urged the contractor to repair the defects and damages as soon as possible.

Residents who would like to contact members of the RT pro tem committee can call Yap at 012-628 5039, vice presidents Mohd Yazid Johan at 012-371 9477 and Arumugam Govindaraj at 019-383 2149 or secretary Lee Chin Seong at 012-283 0961.
