RM8.2mil spent on housing yearly

The Star 22/11/2005

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have been forking out an additional RM8.2mil a year in housing allowances to its rank and file and officers due to the 12 abandoned housing projects.

This additional cost has become a huge strain on the government budget and the money could have been used for other purposes.

“Most of the sick projects are due to the use of inferior quality of goods and materials and the Government may have to restart the projects to make sure that the houses are safe.

“Several of them are not built according to our requirements and are not safe for occupation,” Bukit Aman director of logistics Deputy Comm Datuk Saharudin Samsudin said.

DESERTED BUILDING: This RM22mil housing project in Kuantan was supposed to have been completed in 1999. But it has been abandoned until today.

“If the Government wants to revive these projects, it will have to pay more cash due to higher costs,” he added.

DCP Saharudin could not understand the delay in completing the projects as payment to the contractors was guaranteed by the Government and progress payments had been prompt.

“We will take action against the developers if our investigations reveal that there is a basis for us to do so.

“It is frustrating and pathetic that no fewer than 12 projects have either been abandoned or are considered sick,” he said.

DCP Saharudin added that the projects involved 11 different developers, one of whom was under investigation.

“We are also monitoring the others.

“The developers were all appointed by the Internal Security Ministry and, sad to say, some of them have been irresponsible.

“They are only interested in making a quick buck,” he said, adding that the police were only involved in discussions with the developers in the early planning stages.

“At the end of the day, the victims are the police, the Government and taxpayers.”
