Selfish move
New Straits Times 13/10/2005
WITH reference to "Residents hold protest rally" (NST, Oct 9), it would be
ironic if City Hall succumbs to pressures from these rich and famous folk of
Jalan Gallagher to prevent others from developing their landbank, simply
because these corporate tycoons and VIPs are "nature lovers".
Their "rallying call" is a little absurd. Where were they when their
corporate kin took over land from the helpless poor in Klang? Or when they
denuded our forest reserves in Shah Alam?
If they were true champions against land abuse, I haven’t heard a word from
them when our precious green lung, where our children used to play, was
turned into multiple- dwelling housing in the name of profit. The
authorities must ensure that there is a "level playing field", so to speak.
One rule fits all.
Not so long ago, there were also protests against Bolton Berhad and KTM Bhd
for taking development into the heart of Bukit Tunku, no less exclusive than
Jalan Gallagher itself.
Those folk should take a drive around Bukit Tunku.
In this country, I believe there is no area that is preserved for anyone or
any group rich or poor.
