Introduce 'one
house one family' scheme, Govt urged
The Star 23/9/2004
AN UMNO Youth delegate proposed that the Government introduce a "one
house one family" scheme to check the problem of incest.
Salmi Miah of Kelantan said it was common in the
rural areas for several generations of a family to live in one
house.
"The likelihood of incest occurring is higher
because there is no proper sleeping area and one bathroom is shared
by many," he said when debating the motion of thanks for the Youth
chief's keynote address.
Wan Ahmad Nizam Wan Abdul Hamid of Terengganu said
the movement must seriously study why the Malays continued to lag
behind the other races despite all the assistance given to them
through the New Economic Policy.
"It is time that we seek more effective solutions
to the problem and not always point our finger at the Government.
"We need to mould a new generation of Malays who
can stand on their own feet and face new challenges in this global
environment," he said.
Johor delegate Rusdin Mahamod, when congratulation
the new deputy Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, said he should be
given the chance to prove himself.
"If he fails, we should pancung (behead) him," he
said in jest.
Pahang delegate Wan Amizan Wan Abdul Razak
criticized the Government's tendency of sending "second-class" and
problematic teachers rejected by urban schools to the rural areas.
"In my area in Ulu Tembeling, there are four
schools and since 1985 not a single pupil has scored 5As in the UPSR,"
he said. |
