MP brings up Taman Fadason incidents to City Hall

03/07/2004 The Star By CHOW HOW BAN

Kepong MP Dr Tan Seng Giaw met City Hall officials on June 29 to discuss the collapse of a wall in one of the units of Taman Fadason flats in Jinjang Utara, and the appearance of cracks in several other units.

The MP spoke to City Hall’s Planning Department director Chiam Soon Hock, Public Works Department deputy director Tan Keng Chok and senior official Mohd Yasin Jamaluddin.

After the meeting, Dr Tan told reporters that he would follow up the matter with the Board of Architects Malaysia, Malaysian Architects Association and Malaysian Engineers Board.

“I will write to these boards and associations to urge them to investigate the incidents in Taman Fadason. After gathering reports from them, I will bring the matter up in the Parliament again,” he said.

He was accompanied by three residents from the affected unit and another resident who complained of the cracks in her unit.

The residents said they would not pursue the matter further if the developer agreed to reinstate the external wall and repair the cracked walls and beams.

In February, the owners of the C-18-12 unit engaged a contractor to renovate their home. When carrying out the job, the external wall collapsed.

When contacted, Fadason Holdings Sdn Bhd director C. T. Lee claimed that the developer’s findings showed that the contractor's improper way of knocking down from bottom of the internal wall of the unit had caused the external wall to collapse.

“Every building was built according to specifications. The owners said they wanted to repair the wall.

“They were supposed to provide suggestions on how to repair it but we have yet to receive the proposal,” he said.

He added that the developer would not be responsible to repair the wall as it was not under its scope of work.

On the cracked walls and beams, he said: “They are not structural cracks. They are only hairline cracks that appear on most buildings. We repair these every now and then when we receive residents’ complaints.”
