No rush to abolish CFs, says Ka Ting
MM 28/06/2004

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will not rush into implementing the proposal to abolish the system of issuing certificates of fitness by local authorities.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the system would be used until the ministry found the best mechanism that would guarantee buyers' interests were not affected.

"The Government will not rush to do away with existing procedures until we are ready with a system which can guarantee commitment from all players in ensuring the fitness of buildings, safety of the occupants and full compliance with all specifications."

He acknowledged there were some quarters who were against the proposal because the buyers' safety may be compromised.

"The Ministry has set up a special committee to discuss with professional bodies and Government agencies the details of how to implement the proposal," he said. "We will devise a system that will be able to check abuse."

He said the system would be one that could safeguard the interests of buyers and occupants while preventing developers from influencing professionals to certify buildings as fit for occupation.
