Have panel 'to review issuance of OC for flats'

THE state government has been urged to set up a special committee to review the issuance of Occupational Certificates (OC) for flats which did not comply with building plans.

Opposition leader Phee Boon Poh (DAP - Sungai Puyu) said the committee should also be empowered to have a say before OC was issued to avoid unnecessary problems later.

He said such a move would help check the problems encountered by flat dwellers who failed to get strata titles due to the irresponsible attitude of the developer.

“I don't have to be the chairman of the committee but an ordinary member in the committee will do as this will allow check and balance,'' he said.

Phee said it was time that the state government investigated the backlog on the issuance of strata titles.

“The delay in the issuance of strata titles is a social time bomb that can explode any time as there is a long waiting list,'' he said.

Phee said he believed that corruption had resulted in OC being given out for buildings which did not adhere to building plans.

He urged the state government to investigate the increase in the number of abandoned projects in the state, especially those involving government agencies.

“Money used to revive abandon projects by the state government belongs to the rakyat,” he said.
