Developer
charging exorbitant parking rates
The Star 30/4/2004
WE refer to the letter, “Apartment does not come with parking bay”,
(Sunday Star, April 18).
We sympathise with “Cheated Housebuyer”. We, too, have had a similar
experience.
Although we were aware our apartment did not come with a parking bay
we were, nevertheless, shocked to be informed of the steep parking
charges very much later.
Even if it is the law that the developer of service apartments does
not need to provide a parking bay to each apartment, he should not
charge for the parking bay at such exorbitant rates.
The developer should take note that the owner residents of the
apartments have contributed to the cost of building the underground
car parks, and will be contributing every month to the maintenance
fees and the sinking fund fees to maintain the whole building and
its security, including the car parks.
The least the developer can do is charge the owner residents a
discounted rate for the car parks, rather than the commercial rates
without even the benefit of per entry or overnight parking rates.
In fact, the developer is charging parking rates which are not only
similar to rates at nearby commercial buildings with covered car
parks, but even more than rates at several such buildings.
Surely the apartment parking bays are meant for the convenience of
the residents, and not for making extra profits.
In the name of transparency, the developer should form a management
committee together with representatives of the owner residents of
the apartments to help maintain the property, and thus enhance its
value in future.
