By Cecil FungKuala Lumpur: A marketing executive and a retiree
were granted a combined award of over RM30,000 by the Consumer
Claims Tribunal on Wednesday when the respondents to their claims
failed to turn up.
In the first case, 30-year-old Jeevan Jaganathan
was granted the RM16,488 compensation he sought from New Acres Sdn
Bhd, which is in charge of maintenance and security for
Mediterranean Apartments in Shah Alam where he resides.
He lodged a claim with the tribunal after his car,
was stolen from the apartment's parking lot in May. The car was
found a month later at another location by the police with various
accessories missing.
Jeevan filed a claim for loss of use of his car as
well as the value of the accessories stole, which were not covered
by his insurance policy.
In the second case, 63-year-old Tan Kwi Lim was
awarded the RM13,720 he sought from contractor Lum Lip Chee who was
appointed to renovate his house.
Tan said he had paid RM25,800 to Lum for
construction work to his house but the latter had only completed
half the job.
The tribunal's deputy chairman Eddie Yeo Soon Chye
said both New Acres Sdn Bhd and Lum had 14 days from Wednesday to
compensate the claimants with the respective amount, failing which
it would become a criminal offence. Both respondents however have 30
days from the same date to file an application to set aside the
awards. |
