KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- An interim report on Friday's
landslide at Taman Harmonis in Gombak, in which an eight-year-old
girl was killed, will be ready by next week, a spokesman of the
Mineral and Geoscience Department said.
He said a detailed report would take a month to complete.
"We're studying the slope, land structure and drainage at the site
to determine the actual cause of the landslide," he said.
A seven-member team from the department and engineers from the
Public Works Department, who monitored soil movement at hillslopes
and hilly areas, inspected the site at 9am Sunday.
He said they would also inspect the soil stability at Cemerlang
Heights from where the landslide is believed to have originated.
A housing development is currently in progress there.
"We cannot blame anyone before the report is ready," he said.
The 11pm landslide on Friday caused the back portion of a bungalow
belonging to Dr Azman Ahmad, 42, to collapse, killing his daughter,
Haseenah Azman, who was sleeping with her 12-year-old sister.
Rescue workers extricated Haseenah's body at about 10.30am Saturday.
Dr Azman and his neighbours managed to pull her sister to safety
from the rubble. She suffered minor injuries.
Initial investigations suggest the landslide may have started from
Lot 56, located on a hilltop belonging to a housing developer.
Five houses are said to be under construction on the lot.
The Selayang Municipal Council had directed the developer to cover
the slopes with plastic sheets to prevent another landslide.
A representative from the company, Abdul Nasir Hussin, said the area
would be covered as instructed to enable repair works to be done.
He said an area covering about 333.3m are in danger of collapsing if
heavy rain continues.
Meanwhile, the owner of the vacant lot next to Dr Azman's house, who
wanted to be known only as "Datuk DK" said he had bought the land
recently to build a house.
"However, after seeing what had happened, I may have to reconsider
my plans though it cost me RM2 million to buy the plot," he said
when met at the site.
He said he chosed the spot for the scenic view it provided.
