Landslide terror
Sunday Mail 14/11/2004
MORE than 500 residents in the PKNS flats at Jalan M4, Ampang Jaya,
Selangor, live in fear of landslides.`Their worst
fear was confirmed yesterday morning when a hillslope near Block 8
collapsed, and earth from the landslide buried more than 40 metres of
grassy knoll near the hill.
A resident, Baharudin Sulaiman, whose car was slightly
damaged from the incident, said he heard a rumble at about 5.45am.
"Fortunately, no one was hurt although four vehicles
which were parked near the slope were pushed forward by the earth," said
the 55-year-old retiree, adding that many residents are living in fear of
another landslide.
Also present was an officer from the Ampang Jaya
Municipal Council's (MPAJ) enforcement division and he told Sunday Mail
that a temporary barrier will be rigged up along where the earth has slid
down.
"Our engineering department will commence work to
clean-up the site after Hari Raya," said the officer who declined to be
named.
Bukit Antarabangsa State Assemblyman, Azman Wahid, who
was also at the scene said the MPAJ has mobilised a task force to handle
the situation.
"Plastic sheets are being placed on the exposed slope to
prevent further soil erosion. By the looks of it, our stop-gap measure
should be completed by the end of the day (yesterday)" said Azman.
"As a follow-up, I will also ask the MPAJ's urban
planning unit to find out whether the landslide was caused by development
on the other side of this hill." |
