53 projects to eradicate squatter problem

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 53 projects involving 54,679 units of
homes, under the Integrated
People's Housing Project (PPR) has been initiated to overcome the
squatter problem nationwide.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said 24 out of
these projects, consisting of
34,106 units of homes, is meant for squatters and low-income earners
in Kuala Lumpur.
Najib said up until September, the' National Housing Department has
completed and handed over
12,082 units of the homes and by end of the year a total of 18,650
units will be ready.
He added that by the end of next year another 15,456 units of the
homes will be completed.
Najib said this in his speech before handing over the mock keys to
occupants of the Cochrane
PPR here in Cheras yesterday.
Under the Cochrane PPR, a total of total of 1,620 units of homes
will be built.
He said a survey conducted by the Housing and Local Government
Ministry in 1999 showed there
was about 540,495 squatters nationwide who lived in 131,169 squatter
homes. |
