IT'S SAFE SAYS PKNS
09/04/2003 Malay Mail

Residents of Section 19 Shah Alam can go back to their homes
SELAMAT untuk diduduki "(safe or occupation) was the assurance given by the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) to worried residents of Blok 5,Jalan Cangkul 19/3 in Section 19, Shah Alam.

Yesterday, engineers who inspected the apartment block gave this assurance after conducting an investigation, on the building, where a ground floor unit had caved-in on Sunday.

Notices were issued to all families in the 20-unit five-storey apartment to assure them that the building was safe.

The notice was signed by PKNS chief supervising engineer, Hing Kok Yin, on behalf of PKNS general manager.

In the notice, Hing stated: "Following investigation done on house No 111, PKNS discovered that the caved-in floors and cracked wall of the house were 'localised' and not due to any weakness of the building's element structure.'

The notice added that "since the whole structure is supported by concrete piling, PKNS guarantees that the building is safe for occupation."

On Monday afternoon, residents of the 12-years-old block panicked and abandoned their houses after the floor of No.111 caved in. A wall separating its two rooms developed a crack big enough to put an arm through.

Thirteen families were temporarily evacuated to a community hall near the block while six other families moved out to say with relatives.

They all moved back into their homes after the PKNS notices were issued.

The residents' ad-hoc committee chairman Razali Sahran thanked PKNS for the assurance.

However, Razali, a 36-year-old factory worker, added that the residents were disappointed with the PKNS attitude.

"Only when something serious like this happens will they come and investigate.

"I have been complaining since 2000 about the cracks in my house and the block but nothing was done," said Razali.

"Some investigations were done recently, but it only happened after I personally went to meet State EXCO memebr for Sungai Renggam Datuk Ahmad Nawawi M.Zin and managed to get him to drop by at the apartments in February to inspect the damage.
