wall

Residents also assured that slopes will
be monitored daily
RESIDENTS of Jalan Akik ,Taman Setia, Gombak, here assured that a
rein-forced concrete retaining wall which collapsed on March 29 will be
rebuilt Soon. This pledge came from the developer
of Taman Cemerlang, Indra Ehsan Sdn.Bhd, after several residents
complained to The Malay Mail on the poor workmanship developer.
They claimed that when-ever there is a downpour, they
worry about land-slide. The developer's spokes-man said they have informed
their structural engineers.
"The on-going rainy spell, coupled with clogging of the
weep (drainage) holes on the wall resulted in a build-up of water pressure
at the back of the wall," said the spokesman.
"These factors caused the wall to collapse. "We have
stabilised the exposed slopes with plastic sheets and ensured that run-off
is drained from the area. The affected slopes are monitored daily."
A resident, Ilyas Mohamed ,complained that the problem
started when a double-storey development started two years ago. "Each time
there is a downpour, there would be a landslide and our retaining wall
would collapse. As such incidents have been recurring, we are convinced
that the matter should not be taken for granted," said Ilyas.
He said the drain built in their compound serves no
purpose. Ilyas said that despite numerous complains to the developer and
the Selayang Municipal Council, nothing had been done to rectify the
matter.
Another resident who preferred to remain anonymous said
that he did not know whether the local council was aware of the problem
but hoped action would be taken to strengthen the foundation immediately.
When The Malay Mail visited the site on April 2 a major
portion of the retaining wall had already given way when more of the top
soil was washed away by heavy rain.
However, contractors were seen rebuilding the damaged
retaining wall.
Beside rebuilding the wall, the developer's spokesman
said they will also undertake to clear the area of all debris and
rein-state the boundary walls of the affected lots. |
