Replace houses, developer urged

IPOH: The Taman Lapangan Indah residents action committee wants the developer of the housing scheme to demolish
their cracked houses and replaced them with new ones.
Committee deputy chairman Zulkarnain Hashim said the committee and residents of the 150 single and double-storey
houses want the developer Meranti Tiga Sdn Bhd to demolish the houses and rebuild them as they believed that most of the houses were no longer fit
for occupancy.
“This problem has persisted for nearly three years since we shifted in in October 2000.
“I do not understand how the Certificate of Fitness could have been issued as there were already cracks when we
were handed keys to the houses,” said Zulkarnain, 38, a civil engineer.
He said the houses started to crack about one and a half years ago.
“It is a matter of time before these houses come crashing down.”
Zulkarnain also claimed that the drainage and sewerage systems of the housing scheme were constantly clogged,
causing the area to be flooded at times.
He said the committee had met with the developer four times this year with the last meeting witnessed by Rapat
Setia state assemblyman Chang Kon You on Aug 25.
Meranti Tiga Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Ng Cheng Yeow said it was never the company’s intention to take
such a long time to resolve the problem.
“We had previously followed the recommendation of our consultant engineer to do grouting work (pumping cement
and water into the ground) plus other repair works which came up to about RM700,000 but that did not work.
“Then recently, we engaged another consultant from Kuala Lumpur who suggested that we do a soil test to check
for sinkholes,” said Ng, adding that tests had started on Nov 18 and would take at least six months to complete.
“I understand the residents are anxious but I also hope that they can be patient as this is not something that
can be rectified in a day or two.
“I want them to know that the company guarantees that it will solve their housing problem.”
