Buyers to meet Ong over project 19/08/2001 The Star
PENANG: Purchasers of the abandoned Majestic Heights project are scheduled to meet Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting
today to seek his assistance to revive the project.
Paya Terubong assemblyman Dr Loh Hock Hun said he would lead a delegation of purchasers to meet Ong in Kuala Lumpur.
“Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon had said that the minister could use his powers under Section 11 of the Housing DevelopersAct to solve the
problem.
“We hope the minister will verify that and tell the purchasers frankly what he can or cannot do,” he said.
Dr Koh was reported on Aug 16 as saying that under Section 11(1)(d) or 11(1)(e) of the Act, the minister could direct the housing developer, who
could not complete the project, to petition the High Court to wind up his business.
He said the court petitions by the buyers of the project to wind up the business would be time consuming.
Dr Koh added that Ong issued a directive on March 5 to the original developer, Dayanusa Sdn Bhd, to revive the stalled project but work had not
started yet.
Dr Loh said ministry officials had met the state's high-powered committee set up to resolve the problem several times but both sides ended up
pointing fingers at each other.
“The purchasers have been waiting in anxiety for so long and and they now want clarification on what the ministry and state can and cannot do,” he
added.
Adviser of Ad Hoc Committees (All Phases) for Taman Terubong Indah (Majestic Heights) Purchasers S. L. Chang said a bus had been chartered to take
about 20 representives of Phase 1, 2A, 2B and 3A to meet Ong.
“We have invited the state's high-powered committee chaired by Dr Koh to come along for the meeting but Dr Koh has indicated that he will be
sending his two representatives, Teng Chang Yeow and Cheang Chee Gooi instead,” he said.
“We would rather have decision makers to be present and settle this once and for all,” he added.
