MUAR: More than 20 people here are believed to have been conned into paying deposits totalling more than RM100,000 to a man who offered them
medium- or low-cost homes which do not exist.
Bandar Maharani assemblyman Richard Lau said the man also claimed that he (Lau) was the chairman of a purported housing project, Taman Mutiara, at
Jalan Abdul Rahman.
He said two of the victims, both from Sungai Abong here, had met him this week to ask about the housing scheme where they each "booked" a medium
and a low-cost unit respectively.
"Two days ago, one of them met me and said he paid RM5,500 for a medium-cost unit and this morning, the second victim came and said he paid
RM3,000 for a low-cost unit.
"According to them, at least 20 people had made bookings for houses at the scheme of which they said I was the chairman," he told reporters at his
office yesterday.
Lau said he checked with the local authorities and discovered that there was no such scheme.
He said he had a lodged police report on the use of his name and urged the others who had paid monies to book houses with the conman to also do
the same.
Earlier, the second victim, a businessman, told reporters that a man claiming to be a former student of Lau had offered him a low-cost home if he
paid RM3,000 deposit.
The victim, who declined to be named, said the conman also asked him to become a life member of MCA and asked him to pay RM100 for the life
membership fee.
"Since the man was very convincing, I paid him the deposit," he added.
