1,000 unresolved housing cases compiled
The Star 18/07/2001 By Celeste Fong

THE House Buyers Association (HBA) of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department has compiled at least 1,000 unresolved housing cases.

Department head Michael Chong said the problems included late delivery, abandoned projects, poor workmanship, non-issuance of CFs and strata titles.

He said more than 200 complainants had also turned up at the Housing Problems Workshop held on Saturday to bring up their problems.

Chong said the workshop was organised by the department to help housebuyers who encountered problems.

"Some received vacant possession of the homes without power and water being supplied. "Others found that their homes were not built according to plan," he added.

"We hope to settle the cases amicably," he said, adding that otherwise the help of Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting would be sought.

HBA chairman Datuk Zainuddin Bachik said several developers had given a bad name to the industry. "The money is ours, and the properties' theirs. Be fair (to the buyers)!," urged Zainuddin.

He said there was a need for proper legislation to protect the rights of housebuyers.

HBA secretary-general Chang Kim Loong said the relevant authorities should look into the problems facing the industry, especially in relation to licensing.

He said a feasibility study and geological report of a project should be submitted before the ministry issued a developer with a licence.
