Workers to send memo to minister on errant developers
14/06/2001 The Star

THE MTUC Workers' Consumer Movement said it will submit a memorandum soon to the Housing and Local Government Ministry calling for legal action against housing developers who violated sales-purchase agreement with house buyers.

Movement general-secretary Mustafar Maarof said the memo would be based on feedback from house buyers and from related resolutions of its executive committee meetings.

"The ministry should invoke existing legislations against errant developers besides blacklisting them," he told Bernama.

The movement planned to submit the memo to the minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting next month upon completion of an ongoing exercise to compile as many complaints from affected house buyers.

Mustafar said the majority of complaints received so far alleged delays by developers in completing homes according to the schedule stipulated in sale-purchase agreement.

Although no fault of theirs, house buyers found themselves saddled with repaying housing loan and interests for uncompleted homes, he said.

Complainants also blamed developers for late handover of keys and certificate of fitness besides shoddy workmanship and totally abandoning their housing projects, he said.

The movement welcomes further feedback from workers facing similar problems via telephone at the number 03-80242953.
