IPOH: About 400 people who bought low-cost houses in a project abandoned seven years ago in Silibin may soon see
their dream of owning a house come true, thanks to the Perak Government.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli who visited the project site on Thursday promised the buyers that the
government would either help to identify a new housing site or low-cost units for them.
"Those who had paid half or more for the houses would be given priority for a lot in planned villages. Those who had
only paid 10% of the house price would be offered suitable low-cost units within the town area,'' he said.
Tajol Rosli said that the 8ha housing project along the Ipoh-Lumut Highway was undertaken by Magpie Resources.
"The construction of the 400 units of low-cost houses, priced at RM25,000 each, began in 1994 and was to have been
completed in 1997.
"But the project came to a halt after the developer faced major financial problems. There were also a few buyers who
had completed payment for the houses.
"We sympathise with them and hope what the government is doing will help ease their burden,'' he said.
Tajol Rosli said the government planned to take over the project and sell it to a housing developer who could
provide some compensation to the buyers.
"As the project is on a hilly area we are thinking of converting it into a medium-cost housing project,'' he said.
