Govt move to provide housing funds lauded

PETALING JAYA: The House Buyers Association (HBA) and Real Estate and
Housing Developers Association (Rehda) are extremely pleased with the
government’s move in providing funds for housing for the lower-income
group.
HBA honorary secretary Chang Kim Loong said, however, the association’s
main concern was ensuring that the standard of these houses was of high
quality.
He said housing developers had the tendency of catering only to the
middle and high-income groups, which returned hefty profits unlike
low-cost housing.
Chang added that developers also tend to maximise the use of their plot
of land by overcrowding it with houses.
“We believe that these are only a short-term plan for society and may
have drastic effects in the future,” he said.
Rehda president Datuk Eddy Chen Lok Loi said the move to meet the
consumers’ housing needs was timely.
He said the fiscal measures of reducing income tax and increasing the
ceiling of maximum chargeable income would help put more money in the
consumers’ hands to boost the domestic economy.
