Ministry's attitude to housing
woes criticised
15/05/1999 The SunPetaling Jaya, Fri: The Federation of Malaysian
Consumers Association (FOMCA) is unhappy with the Housing and Local Government
Ministry's lackadaisical attitude to consumers' housing problems.
President Prof. Hamdan Adnan told the Sun today that 90% of the problems stem
from the Housing Developers Act which leans heavily in the developer's favour.
There are loopholes in the act which allow developers to, among others, get
away with inferior quality work, abandon housing projects at will, and levy
extra charges on customers under the pretext of late payments of loans, he said.
Earlier this year, Housing Minister Datuk Dr Ting Chew Peh had been quoted as
saying that the government will not force developers to adopt the build and
sell concept.
In responding to the ministry's stand today, Hamdan said he hoped the ministry
will be pro-consumer by not only implementing the build-and-sell concept but
also introducing a House Buyer's Act.
"If the ministry is not willing to have such an act, then let the Domestic Trade
and Consumer Affair Ministry include it under the Consumers Protection Act"
